There's A Black Cat
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
Inspired by Van Morrison’s There’ll Be Days Like This, this piece reflects the rhythm and resilience of Belfast — a city that’s both divided and deeply connected. The dark silhouette of Black Mountain and Cavehill anchors the skyline, while the red, jagged line marked with crosses represents both the Farset River and the peace walls that cut through the city, like a scar cutting and stretching from Cave Hill down to the sea. It’s a visual metaphor for Belfast’s contradictions — beauty and tension, hope and endurance.
There’ll Be Days Like This is part of my ongoing series Sketchy Thoughts — a playful, evolving body of work that parodies the kind of ‘art’ we see for sale today. It’s a spontaneous visual diary of what I see and feel around me, created entirely on my iPad — in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere — capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece is sparked by a passing sentiment, a song, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore humour, perception, and the immediacy of everyday thought — quick, expressive, and rooted in the moment.
