Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night
Digital sketch on iPad — Limited Edition Print
Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night is part of my ongoing series called Sketchy Thoughts - a playful, growing body of work, a parody of the kind of ‘art’ we see for sale today. I guess it's a spontaneous visual diary of what I see around me. Created entirely on my iPad, these sketches appear wherever I happen to be, in the bath, on a plane, in the car, or on a beach somewhere, capturing thoughts before they slip away. Each piece is sparked by a passing sentiment, a song, or a fleeting idea, turning quick impressions into lasting images.
Inspired by the iconic lyric, this piece captures a solitary blackbird against a deep, electric blue night sky, a simple, striking image that hums with quiet energy. The loose brushwork and hand-scrawled text bring immediacy and emotion, evoking the stillness and melancholy of the night, with a touch of hopeful song - allegedly.
Together, the works in Sketchy Thoughts explore the humour, poetry, and fleeting perceptions that fill everyday life, quick, expressive, and always rooted in the moment.
